Are You Ready to Say I Do?
The right place to look for an answer is within us, not in our partners.
We have got plenty of time to think before we say the big words “I do” on our wedding day. In fact we spend a lot of our time growing up thinking about getting married. Every partner we are dating is a potential future husband or wife.
The answer we are looking for when thinking about marriage is not in our partner’s personality, perfections, bad habits or mistakes. It is within us.
It took me many years of failed relationships to finally understand how love works. I used to seek perfection in all of my previous partners. My expectations were high and I was always looking for mistakes they might make. It was like I had a scenario in my head of how things were supposed to be. That always led to disappointment and they were checked off my “marriage candidate list”.
Are we happy with who we are? Can we entertain ourselves with our own thoughts? Can we imagine our life without our partner? If the answer to all those questions is yes, then we can definitely think about getting married.
Two years after my last relationship, I have finally started to love myself. It took me a lot of hours of meditation and reflection upon my mistakes to be as easy-going as I am today. Finding true happiness in being alone was a challenge but it has made me feel much more secure.
Be self-sufficient, love every bit of your body and soul, and be grateful for the present moment.
We must love ourselves first to be ready to receive and share love with others. We are ready to let another person fulfill us and just like I was, we are ready to say “I do”.
