Would You Dare To Go Over This 45-meter Waterfall? {video}
Sharing a 4-hour canyoning adventure with a 45-meter waterfall in the most beautiful place in Slovenia called Bovec, Canyon Fratarca.
After canyoning was canceled the first day because of heavy rain, we were finally able to do it the next day thanks to our guide from Bovec Šport Center who tried so hard to get us in the canyon after all. An unforgettable experience of almost shitting my pants a few times. In a good way :)
When it rains in the mountains, it rains for real
We arrived in Bovec a day before our canyoning adventure was scheduled. It started to rain heavily that afternoon and it became pretty obvious that we might not be able to go into the canyon the next day. I contacted the agency and they confirmed to be at our meeting point at 8 am the following morning.
It was pouring rain all night and we got our hopes up for a second because of a brief window of no rain in the morning. Our guide Martin was feeling optimistic and took us up to the canyon Fratarca with full attire but made no promises that we would be able to do the tour because of high water. Hiking up for about 10 minutes in full canyoning attire warmed us up just enough to make it through the cold June morning in the mountains. By the time we reached the point where we could see if the water level is right, it had already begun to rain heavily. We turned around and Martin suggested to take us to another shorter canyon about 15 minutes away, Canyon Sušec. The weather also looked a little bit more promising over on that side. We agreed to go since we were already dressed in wet suits and we got up early to do this :)
Canyon Sušec was also not an option that day. Our guide said he might be able to take us out the next day in the afternoon, depending on the weather. Having done canyoning twice before, I really wanted Bryan to experience it too. We decided to stay another day and hoped we will be able to go the next day.
After having our second morning coffee in downtown Bovec, we made an alternative plan for our rainy day in Bovec and it unexpectedly ended up being extremely adventurous. Curious to know what did? Let's just say it involves more water. Stay tuned to find out!
We also got a text from Martin that we will be able to get into Canyon Fratarca the following afternoon.
After the rain comes the sun
We met at the same spot and our gear was already ready. The warm spring sun was out to encourage us to dip into the cold canyon water.
After about 15 minutes into our hike, we saw the highlight of our adventure. The view 45-meter waterfall right in front of us had my blood pumping more than the steep hill we were hiking on to get to our starting point. This should be fun and terrifying, I thought. Not trying to think about it too much, we headed further up the trail as soon as we caught our breath.
Our excitement turned into gasping for air after our first jump in the water. Snowmelt water was cold but our suits were thick enough and our gear was in great condition. Better than words, the 60-second video shows a few highlights of a 4-hour canyoning adventure.
The whole experience was unforgettable and amazing, from the day we got rained out until the next day when we made it to the bottom of the canyon. I am very happy that our guide made it happen even with the tricky weather circumstances. I still get goosebumps when I think of some waterfalls but I'm definitely doing it again.
